Looking to buy either of these in September. Which should I get? and why?

I don't care about people who say these are 'hairdresser' cars, I'm want a 'drivers' car to have some fun on my way to work.

The fact the roofs come off is not important to me, just a little bonus.

Year 2000 onwards, I'm looking at.

I have both in Mk1, have driven the Mk2 MR2 and the Mk2 & Mk3 MX5's so am fairly up on them.

They are both similar outputs, both are as practical as a bedsit for a family of 6 and are both loads of fun. You can have a factory fit hard top with either as well.

MR2 - loads about, ignore the 1.6, it's pants. The 1.8iS is the model to have really. There isn't a great deal to go wrong with them and they like a good thrashing. Easily converted to forced induction, handle like they ae on rails, provided decent tyres and just buckets of fun.

Need to watch out for accident damage from wifey's spinning them through lack of ability, linglong/viking/lassr tyres or a combination of both. Needs full service history, ideally want an enthusiast. Being 'tracked' isn't the end of the world - it's great on the tack so why not take it there?

MR2. Again, great handling, weigh next to nowt and are a hoot to drive. Early allys have a habit of going porous so look for scabby wheels and flat tyres. Read up on the pre-cat issue, now resolved but not in all early cars. Mr2oc (www.mr2oc.co.uk) will tell you more. Again, same issues of who's spun it/crashed it etc.

Myself? Dont know, probably the 2 because I'm an MR2 geek but both are hugely capable, great fun and rag top to boot.

Good luck

I had same choice to make and decided on the MX5. The luggage space made a difference for me, and slightly preferred the looks.

I'm sure you'd be happy with either - but try both. I :D every time I drive the mx5.

I'm very partial to the looks of the MK3 MR2 right now, but whichever you get as long as its been looked after will bring you hours of joy, and very little storage space :)

My MR2 MK3

Must say I love my car :) I couldn't compare it to an MX-5 as I've never driven one, but I can certainly vouch for the RWD aspect of it making it a lot more interesting than a FWD car :)

I'm biased, but I prefer the MX5 (mk2 or 2.5).

Though Eidlon's or Lordmike's MR2 turbos were rather sorted. :)

Given the choice between the Mk3 MR2 and an MX5 I'd be going Mazda all the way. I'm actually considering getting an MX5 myself, just for some top down fun when I get round to selling the Elise.

I just couldn't get past how awful the MR2 MK3 looks, regardless of how good a car it is.

I don't think comparing an MX5 and a MkII MR2 Turbo is any good as they are completely different cars. One is a light, nimble car with progressive, predictable behaviour and the other is a very rapid, heavy car with decent but fairly unpredictable handling.

The MkII MR2, even the NA, is a vastly different car to the MkI and MkIII, which can be compared to the MX5 better.
