Mazda RX8 - anything else like it?

Cheers for the comments guys.

I think I've ruled out this car purely due to the amount of short trips I make.

I can see it now; I'll be pretty much redlining it in nearly every trip in order to rapidly warm it up. Surely continuously redlining a cold engine can't do it much good.

Beautiful looking car though. But realistically I don't think it's going to work for me :(.

Looking at the Honda Civic Type R now. Not a patch looks wise to the RX8 though (IMO).

No, but it will be faster, more reliable, more economical, and be better built.

So you know, what do you do.

It's funny. Earlier tonight I witnessed someone parking up a RX8, after what looked like a short trip to the chippy. He rev'ed the crap out of it and switched off.

The gear stick is comical though on the Civic, isn't it. I've read it is a good gear box and very smooth, but Christ.. it looks so wrong. I'd go as far to say that it looks ridiculous. Will take some getting use to. But my jokes aside; it does seem like a much more sensible option.

One of the best cars ever made, a real drivers car, how ever you have to be good at driving to enjoy them, which says a lot about the posters in here who hate on it. (Gibbo is the one exception, but I think that's because the Porche has gone to his head)

Thats the correct proceedure, and its only 4000rpm, hardly revving the nuts out of it. The idea being that the rotors are going fast enough that when you switch off they expell all the remaining fuel/air out so as not to flood.
Only reason rotarys flood so easy is the rich start running dictated to us by europe laws on emissions.
Remap a rotary and it wont flood. Its definitly not a pants engine, what makes it pants is people not knowing how to treat them.

I do agree its a very compramised car, its not fast enough, it was aimed at normal drivers and thats what ruins the engine, rotarys should be FI only IMO.

It says something when you have to use reverse psychology to try and convince people how good a car is.

And what are you using as the yard stick for being "good at driving"? The type of car you own?

If that's the case Elton John is a better driver than any of us will ever be.

I considered one myself a few years ago so I test drove a few 192s and 231s. I loved the styling and the handling wasn't too bad but by god that engine is awful. I revved the life out of it and it felt like the clutch was slipping, lots of revs but zero power. Completely devoid of any character.

I've never really owned cars that could be classed as economical but the RX8 takes it to a whole new level. I had to cut my test drive short as I'd used 1/4 of a tank in the first 15 mins of my drive.

would ruin the drive imho,

I don't think it would. I always thought it was a shame that Mazda didn't use their 2.0-litre four cylinder, with a few tweaks. Would have been a much more enjoyable car to drive as a result, I feel. Great engine in the 3. They could have turbocharged it as well then, with ease.

There getting cheaper and cheaper to buy, pretty soon owners will be giving them away. 3 years ago i paid £6k for mine, 1 and a half years ago i paid £2.8k both similar milage.

Thing with them being so cheap, loads of chavs have got them round here now so there nothing special and no doubt they wont look after them, further ruining there reputation.
Make sure you take it on track, its the only place the car feels moderatly fast.

should be an interesting thread. lots of kids at work have talked about getting these without the first clue of what theyll be like to live with

I'll stick to my E36 M3 for my cheap lolz thanks :D

and very robust. bit of a chav image, but nothing as bad as it used to be.

being a lot older though it would need a lot more work to make it good compared to an RX8, but it all depends on what you want i suppose

I remember trading in my early 2004 RX8 in late 2005 and getting £17k for it.
How times have changed.
