Mazda RX8 - anything else like it?

I have, now all you need to do is learn that its a ROTARY engine, and not a rotatory.

Oh, and potentially, learn what car you actually own ;) MX8

:o I must have had too much to drink last night!?

should be an interesting thread. lots of kids at work have talked about getting these without the first clue of what theyll be like to live with

I'll stick to my E36 M3 for my cheap lolz thanks :D

No offence but I do not like the look of the E36 M3, at all! But appreciate that it's faster and more economical. :)

congrats on the new purchase OP

/// awaits spec me a Wankel rotary rebuild thread within 3 months///

Thanks! But this not what I want to happen! :p

With the whole warming it up before switch off, It did worry me before purchasing. But I'm not finding it a problem as the engine warms up to temperature in around 5 minutes when idling. Engine temperature also stays warm for ages after switching off. So it's not like you are left in limbo with it as it heats up very quickly and stays warm for a very lengthy period.

Have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying it, this mornings drive to work was incredible! :)

Bare in mind I've come from a 1995 1.3 Ford Fiesta which I've owned for 12 years - and you'll appreciate how much I'm in love with the RX8! :D

I know I've rolled the dice with this car. But for under £2k with a recently rebuilt engine it seemed like it's worth a daring punt. I'm going to look after it and treat it right and hopefully it will reward me by not burning my fingers in the next 2-4 years.

2 years later, you can pick these up for less than £2k..

Looking for a track car. I have cayman as my main drive and wouldn't dream of subjecting it to the abuse of a track.. but an rx8.. hmm

I can pick up a 2004, 30k mile, 2 owner, clean rx8 for £1.6k! Starts hot and cold..

It can seriously handle for the price.. absolutely nothing comes close!
Its amazing how cheap these are now

ive seen a few recently as well and been tempted, just the fact it only has 2 seats in the back buggers it up for me. mrs has put her foot down next car needs to have 3 seats in the back as we have three children.

went even as far as asking around if a 3 seater can be retro fitted in the back but having seen a stripped out rx8 there is zero chance:( shame we cant afford 2 cars atm

Have you come from a asthmatic mk1 Corsa 1.0 or something? My 1.4 Honda civic with 88bhp and 3lb's of torque has pull in 1st and 2nd...... What about the rest of the gears?

I really do like the RX8 for the price. If I could afford a cheap play car, I think it would be one of these. Might not be that fast but they look good, handle good and kitted out very well.

Edit: just seen the 1.3 fiesta bit, that explaines that then. Awful engine the 1.3.

I keep getting tempted to swap my Prelude for one of these. Really just the thought of a further drop in mpg and increased potential for throwing bills that puts me off (I'm really poor! ). But then pretty much everything else I eye up (soarer, gtv, 924 etc) has the same issue.

But the prelude is relatively bomb-proof so if money's tight I can't really see a benefit to you?

The mazda is a car to pick up cheap, expect the worst and celebrate if it doesn't happen. If you bought one then couldn't fix it when it blew up you'd just be letting yourself in for a bad time!

Exactly. The prelude has been uber reliable barring the odd age related replacement such as a wheel bearing and rusted back box. Everything service and repair wise bar the wheel bearing has been within the scope of even my low level spannering abilities. I just periodically get an itch to try something different but objectively sticking with the lude always wins out.

Glad this got bumped.

My RX8 is now on almost spot on 79000 miles and still starts on the button hot or cold. Going in for a major service, MOT and new brakes all round and Mazda's price for those was sphincter puckering. Front discs alone were £382

So I called the insurance company, asked what uprated brakes would add to my policy. £0. Fantastic. Grooved discs and yellow stuff pads from brake depot for just £300 then and some braided brake lines from Mazda Rotary Parts, Local Mazda dealer are happy to fit them for the normal charge. :) Also have a uprated starter motor to fit. Not actually needed, but my mate bought the top of the line higher speed one, then wrote his car off before fitting it. Yoink!

Still makes me grin like an idiot whenever I drive it. New brakes will make it even more fun. Now looking at uprating the dampers *Tein active system looks cool*, springs, ARB's and droplinks. I'm already spending roughly half what the car is worth tomorrow. ;)

I wish Mazda would pull their fingers out on the RX9 that they said was coming about 4 years ago. But I may well change to another manufacturer at this rate. But I can't really think of anything I want to change to.

I come very come to changing my RX8 for the newer RX8 r3 about 6 months ago..

But the RX8 R3 got sold just before I had all the funds to buy it..:(

I know that thought. But if I did change to another RX8, it'd probably be a Prodrive PZ. But the colours on those are pretty meh.

I just love me some Velocity Red and the red and black interior just sets it off nicely.

Had mine nearly 4 years now. Apart from oil, tyres and an anti roll bar drop link snap it's been pretty faultless. Love driving it still, genuinely going to miss it when I Finish building my golf.

Such a lot of car for not a lot of money.

As long as the oil is checked via the dipstick it should be ok. My cousin had one and loved it to bits. I would take a chance of owning one but I feel it would cost a lot of £££ to put right when wrong and I cba with that.

servicing includes replacing coil packs and plugs every 30/ 40k and a engine rebuild every 60. < if you make it that far.

i always run 2stroke oil in the tank.
and toped up engine oil every 3 tank fullys as it injects it to the engine, idealy it should have had a seperate bottle / with a level sensor.

guy from my car club has just bought a running rx8 with hot start issues tax and tested for £250 complete, even being a 192 its still utter madness.

even budgeting 2k for an engine rebuild supplied and fitted its a bargain way into reasonably fun rwd car

Bought an 06 231 with Bose, Xenons, electric and heated seats, climate. It also comes with a very cool option which seems to have been fitted to most models... Yes the amazing, almost jet/turbine sounding engine.

I paid £1400 with 12M Test and 5 months tax. The bonus was the private plate it came with RC 51MCN, which with the dodgy spacing and bolt cover looks great for anyone name Tiberius, err :D Apparently the plate is worth upwards of £800 so a total of around £600 for a car of this quality, in such fantastic condition almost seems like some kind of fraud/theft/black magic.

PLate is worth as much as someone is willing to pay, 2 different companies said they would give me approx £400 for my plate...

If they could sell it, checked their site and they were selling it for £750, so I put it on eBay too left it there for a few month, not so much as a query or offer, just gonna leave it on the car LOL
