Looking at a mb and chip (intel i3) combination. The mb cpu compatibility list doesn't list the specific cpu but does have others from the same type so is obviously technically capable of running the chip.

Will a mb automatically pick up the settings for a cpu even if it isn't on the list or does it need the settings specifically written into its bios code to recognise it.

As I said the mb does list other similar spec/era chips so I cannot see a reason why it shouldn't run.

As long as it is actually the same CPU core e.g. then chances are 95% that it will work fine, but most likely will misreport e.g. the Processor name as a different model or come up with Unknown Intel Processor in the BIOS.

What motherboard and processor please? as I'm sure with a bit of Googling someone can find some more details

It should work as long it's the same socket (as it'll be a new chip I can't think why it would be an older socket like 1155 or similar). Post what combo it is and we'll help

Thanks for the reply. I think you are right and it has just been left off the list. However, I ended up buying a different mb anyway.
