A friend of mine is after a new MB, CPU and Ram. His budget is around £200, he doesn't game so I'm thinking on-board graphics with the best CPU I can get.
Any suggestions?
Windows 7 64bit

Cheers

Could probably get a x3 from somewhere else for 10-15 more

or if it was me to make sure best bang for buck and having a quad core to boot, windows 7 you can get away with 2gb but 4 would make it nice and snappy, also i know the 620 will do 3.3 to 3.5Ghz OC on stock voltage and generally if the case is okay, wont need any aftermarket cooler.

EDIT: minus the delivery if you order for him with your forum account :)

Thanks for the suggestions, I was thinking of something similar.

How do the X2 etc stand up against the similar priced Phenom II X2 Dual Cores?

the P2 will out do the athlon's from there L3 cache which the athlons lack.

L3 is important however you would normally only really see real word difference in gaming etc.

If he has dosh, go for the p2 version instead of the athlon and if he wants a quad core, go for the 620.

was going to add

the market at this price is quite saturated by AMD, so there is a lot to choose from and 10 pound each way can get you a number of chips from amd. Personally, the quad would be my choice, it clocks well with stock cooling and with it clocked, the l3 doesnt even show any lacking exepct from ingame from what ive heard/seen on the forum.

You can't say that without suggesting another!

I'm thinking of DDR3, but i am open to idea's

Cheers

ive suggested 2 above that use the ddr3 system, not ddr2 so i really dont need to suggest another mate, also there are multiple configs like i said with am3 chips.

DDR3 +nb speed helps am3 setups. You just cannot go wrong with a am3 setup with a fast nb speed.

i'd go with the x4 620 setup that lemzip suggested, the 785g's onboard gfx are decent unless your gaming (which you have already said is not what its for) and as new software is already getting optimized for multiple cores the x4 will out perform the phenom x2's in most things.

the hd 4200 is more than capable of doing anything bar games, it can do 1080p blu ray without even worrying about it and i can personally say even overlcoking the gpu gives amazing results on the -M evo asus board suggested above.

Yes. But you are comprimising on the cpu.

You will notice a speed increase from dual - quad.

But almost nothing going from ddr - ddr3

fail.

i think this is the issue. AMD has the lower end of the market saturated? Do you agree with this? There is so much choice out there and either saying he has a budget of 200 or 220 can give various different setups as in the 20 pound bracket, we have 8+ chips that can fall in it it.

Do you agree, the 620 would be the best in the long run?

i went for the corsair as i have seen a few issues with the board "I" suggested and the ocz ram so hence the difference in ram but this setup might not have any issues.
