Got the following

intel bad axe 2
core 2.9 quad extreme
4gb (4x1gb sticks geil)
8800gtx bfg

turned machine on last night. Won't post.

I know the monitor is working (tried s laptop on it). If I pull the graphics card, no bleeps, nothing. If mb has no heatsink on CPU it will scream on siren for overheat. If no memory on, it bleeps.

So I'm thinking gfx card. As no working card for video output, no post. Tried the gfx card in all 3 pci-e slots. Same result. Fan spins, doesn't smell doesn't get excessively hot just no video output.

Bios has been reset back to defaults and it's the same result.

Anyone got any suggestions

Is that correct. I'm trying to g

Hi lancer, if you turn it on without the gfx card in it does nothing?

It should beep an error code.

Looks like the board to me, can you try your card in another system or do you have a known working card to try in the board?

If no gfx card in. No beep at all. Also, if you push the power button it instantly turns off, which to me means it not posting in the background.

A friend has a machine I might be able to snaffle a pci gfx card from to try. Unfortunately I have no spares in this area. I can't try my card in his machine as his psu isn't big enough and he has no pci-e slots.

If it is the board which I am now leaning toward any mb's to recommend. I'm thinking Asus p5q deluxe or Asus striker ii formula or msi p45 platinum

LOL lancer, been on the hunt for a while myself,

I think its your board. It shouldnt just power off, it should scream at you or at least beep.

I was warned off the striker 2 in favour of a P45 mobo, and when I asked about the P5Q delux, I was informed that the P5Q E was a better option. They are almost the same board, but I cant find a P5QE board in stock.
I cant help on the MSI boards Im afraid, I was aand am looking at an Asus.

Do you use SLI? If not forget the striker. If you do then you could do worse than upgrade to a P45 mobo and get a HD 5770 or similar, depends on your budget.

reaslised I didn't make myself that clear, (this is what happens when you're trying to type on an iphone in a moving car)

when I said the machine powers off, what I meant was, after turning it on and nothing happening, if I then press the power button, it turns off instatly, ie it doesn't wait for 5 seconds with the power button held in and then power off as it would normally.

just got in and retried things.

1. no ram - machine beeps as it should
2. no graphics card - no noise at all (which I can't find a reference for in the intel bad axe manual)
3. graphics card plugged in, no power to the two six pin plugs for 8800 GTX - machine screams the siren.

as it happens the friends machine has onboard GPU so I can't test another card in the slot. (bummer) but from what I remember many moons ago (it's been a long time since I had a board go on me.) even without a graphics card, it should at least beep or even post but go no further.

so my opinion is leaning towards motherboard.

let the research begin, trick is finding a 775 socket board which takes ddr-2and enough sata sockets for a reasonable price AND IS IN STOCK!

without a gfx card, it wont post as it cant detect the video ram. Very strange that it does nothing.

Stock very low of good 775 boards atm but depends what your after.

I've ordered the P5Q deluxe. has everything I want, good cable placement, takes my Quad extreme CPU and my RAM so waiting on delivery now. I hope I've diagnosed right

okay, this is getting really wierd now.

new m/b fitted, new graphics card, same cpu, same RAM as before.

power up. nada, nothing. no bleeps to indicate what is going on.

tried it with no RAM with graphics cards
tried it with no RAM no graphics card
tried it with RAM with graphics card
tried it with RAM no graphics cardthe

not one of them produces any kind of bleep from the board.

tried the same thing on both boards, with both graphics cards. no sound at all.

just not possible that both motherboards are blown. I just don't get the motherboard. no bleeps on power up for ANYTHING.

ideas now please?

cue darth vader breathing and voice

"I HAVE YOU NOW!"

unreal, absolutely unreal, there was a tiny, and I mean tiny piece of metal sandwiched between the new board and the back of the case that was shorting it out.

once removed, it functions. we have life.

motherboard AND GFX card had blown, so its a good job I went out and get an ATI today. we are up and running. finally. what a week.
