Over there...
I have a ~8month old MBA (basically the first of the Haswells whenever that was) and when I am finished using it I just close the lid and leave it.

However when I've been coming back to it the battery has dropped.

So I did a test and last night I closed it up (about 11pm) and today I opened it up (about 4pm) and it had dropped by 7%.

Is that typical? It doesn't seem to have the long battery life in use either (tho I am using chrome to browse now if it makes a diff?).

Is there anything is can do to improve these two aspects, and is it typical?

Click on the battery icon, open energy saving preferences.
Third tick box down - Enable Power Nap while on battery power.

I think this might help? Or maybe it's only when the screen is off. I don't know.

Chrome makes a huge difference. I love chrome, i miss chrome. But safari is just so much better when it comes to power management on the MBA.

I've noticed that when I run VMs and don't shut them down, the machine will sometimes end up draining its charge. I think that it is being kept awake when it wakes up to sync using Power Nap. I can't provide exact help but I'd be surprised if it wasn't something similar?

Yes it's normal, I think a typical amount not using power nap is around 2% from reading on the Mac Rumours forum, I don't notice it myself.
