Hi folks. Quick question for u.

I'm wondering what the speed difference is (in term of real world usage as opposed to benchmarks) between the flash drive in the new MacBook air and an aftermarket ssd for a MacBook.

Train for asking is I am sorely tempted by the new 13" MBA, but wondering what the usage experience is like as compared with a half decent ssd in a MacBook. I know the MBA Is more about portability than speed but wondering what the speed trade off would be like.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Well, according to the new 13" MBA review, the performance is comparable to the regular 13" MBP with a spinning hard drive.

Therefore, one could only assume it would be equal, if not slightly less than a MacBook with a SSD.

Dan, seen that MR story? You can buy an SSD in the same style as in the new MBA but blasts the original out of the water (comparing speeds) looks epic! :p

Not thats I'm thinking of another MBA ¬.¬

Yeah, I was on about the Engadget review that says the 13" air is almost as quick as the 13" MBP.

You buying one? :D

Well if the performance is comparable to the 13" MBP it'll be the same as the MacBook as they have the same hardware. Although, the MBP has an extra 2Gb of RAM over the MBA and MacBook.

Anyway the MacBook/MBP with an SSD will be faster than a MacBook Air with an SSD. Easily.

In the vid files above, it doesn't seem like it is that much quicker to load stuff actually? Is that your everyday experience MacRS4?

I was kinda thinking that the Vertex2E would be a noticeably better/faster HD than the Air's SSD. Perhaps it is (but not that noticeable at loading times etc).

I would have thought Margaret is right, that a Macbook (even the old Macbook Black with an SSD) would be faster.

Really on the fence at the mo, I have the black macbook and someone is keen to buy it off me which means a release of cash for a new machine...just not sure whether to go the Macbook route (plus SSD) or MBA .... or even keep the black and chuck and SSD in there..

arghhhh....decisions decisions....

Despite the help from the SSD the new MBA is not a powerhouse. If you need CPU power and RAM in an Apple laptop then a MacBook Pro + SSD is better by far.

The MBA is brilliant for portability and instant on access...

Up to the individual what they need.

How easy is it to fit an aftermarket SSD to a 13" Macbook pro? Do i need special screwdrivers?

Reasonably confident with installing IT kit (albeit in a tower unit!!!).
