Hey guys

Wondered if any mbp experts could offer some advice...

I am due to fly on holiday in a few weeks and wondered how much cheaper a MBP 15" retina would be from customs...

Well I called D____ at Gatwick Airport and they said a :

MBP 15" retina
2.7ghz I7
16gb
512ssd
Ati 6750 2gb gfx

Costs £1999

The MBP 15" retina
2.4ghz
8gb
256ssd
ati 6750 2gb gfx

Costs £1549

A few queries:-

I have always used windows until starting uni last year and kind of like the MBP a lot, its fast, looks good, handles anything you throw at it and is right up my street :-)

a) is the retina display that good? what benefits does it have over MBP is the extra £££ worth it?

b) If I went for the 2.4ghz 15" MBP retina display how easy is it to upgrade the RAM and SSD myself? I can build computers and repair them..

c) I can run windows and MAC OS on it can't I?

d) I find it hard to justify £2K on a laptop, am I mad? whats the alternative non apple of course

e) do you think I can get more of a discount if I went through uni via apple education deals

What I use a computer for is: some video editing, some photo editing, audio music conversion, gaming sometimes....learning programming i.e. java, creating and maintaining websites..

thank you so much for your help and support

a) Not that great in my opinion but my eyes are crap (I'd have to sit about a foot away from the screen for it to be useful).
b) Can't upgrade the retina yourself
c) Yes
d) No you're not mad, £2k is barmy but there are **** all well built alternatives for less.
e) Yes

You can upgrade this (drives - RAM is maxed) and I just saved you £500, no need to thank me. ;)

thanks for all your help

thats why i asked about the ssd and ram?

RAM is soldered in. And I have no idea about the SSD, but I doubt it. Apple are being ***** these days. "You don't need a CD drive anymore" "Buy an adapter if you want to use an ethernet cable" "Don't open your own computer, your wotsit covered hands will ruin it" etc.

I mean there aren't many well built alternatives for less than the MBP cost. I think some of the top end Dell laptops and Vaios were meant to be pretty good in terms of quality but I've never used them.

I'm actually quite tempted by the link I posted to you, I've got a 2010 MBP, hi res screen etc. But I really can't be arsed dicking about with adapters.
