Well my plan was to get rid of the Superdrive and replace it with the 500GB internal, replacing the internal 500GB with an SSD (two hard drives).
Opened the case up, swapped everything around as I needed and everything was great. Rebooted the machine into Lion and could see the M4 no problem. Restarted the machine, updated the firmware (external CD drive), booted back into Lion to enable TRIM via the Terminal. This is where things started going weird, I got an error do to with 's and "s, which was uber delayed in telling me so, so much so that I had done the next two lines clearing caches. Thought nothing of it and went to reboot to see what the dealio was. Wouldn't boot back into Lion, nor the Snow Leopard partition I had on the 500GB...
Ended up installing Snow Leopard on the M4 to work out what was going on with the 500GB... Repair disk couldn't complete as it kept disconnecting, tried migration assistant with it to import my 500GB SL settings, disconnected and hung the machine. I ended up erasing the 500GB as I had it all backed up, with a plan to then copy everything from the backup onto it. Drive disconnected again...
So I opened the case up, took out the 500GB and caddy, closed her up again and am currently watching my backup of Lion copy onto the 500GB drive in a portable case via USB... So the drive is fine...
A few things:
1) The laptop was getting uber hot with two hards drive in, fans on constantly, hotter than normal to touch, would this affect the 500GB drive?
2) Is it possible the SATA>IDE on the caddy is faulty?
3) Is the SATA>IDE prone to fail or disconnect itself for no reason?
Trying to get my head around this so thanks for reading if you did.
TLDR: The hard drive in the caddy/superdrive space sat on a SATA>IDE converter keeps disconnecting/unmounting/going invisible. Drive works fine in a case via USB.
**UPDATE**
Just read here about spontaneous ejects over PATA (what I referred to as SATA>IDE). http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1129729

Poosticks. I doubt there is a solution to this.
**UPDATE 2**
Possible solution: Replace optibay drive with stock hard drive... (I have no idea where my stock drive is, I think it's in my PS3...)
