am thinking of getting a MBP in the next week or so as the current models have everything i need in a MBP (15inch 2.66ghz with the dual graphics) but there is always the nagging noise in the background (sometimes its the wife/girlfriend) thats telling you do you need it now or is there a new model out soon, while its pretty much always the case with technology, i cant see there been much of a leap in tech if i waited for the new models to come out and if there was would it been a worth while wait

I bought my first MBP (aluminium keys) back in June 08 and a few months later the current model (unibody) came out. Does it make any different to me ? No.

It does what it says.... it works!

I like the older style aluminium key one :) (flate mate has one from nearly 3 years ago and its aged well)

Iv got one of the current ones and i would recommend it fully! Waiting is so over rated....

I'm waiting I've pressed the buy button 2 quick in the past on more than one occassion and always regretted it. The rumours are for the i5 processors which leaked benchmarks show a decent (~25%) increase in performance.

Personally I'm waiting but then I have a perfectly good laptop already and am merely wanting to come back to the mac fold (I sold my late 2007 MBP mid last year as I primarily do windows dev - but I miss it too much!)

I'd say wait until after the press release. If there is something shiny then you can make a choice between the new one or a discounted older one. And if no MBP is announced then all you've lost is a couple of weeks.

yea i went to look at some today in the purple shirt place and they didnt have the 15 inch one i wanted to look at, so i decided to wait a few week to see what appears, wouldnt mind a graphics boost in the new models as the 9600m just doesnt seem a lot these days :)

I've noticed less availability too. maybe a sign that the supply chain is being wound down so that there isn't an oversupply of old models when the new comes out?

There are heaps of all Macbook Pro configurations available in the Apple distribution centres. If there are local shortages then probably because the local dealers don't want to pay for stock at the end of the year. The MBP has been refreshed in June, so a refresh in January would be very unlikely. No new SKUs have yet been issued, and there are no quantity restrictions for orders. I am happy to eat my hat if I am wrong, but the tablet is pretty certain and the next upgrade needed would for the Mac Pro, now that the new iMac Quads are diminishing the Mac Pro value.

Arrandale is out.

They can't leave upgrading the MacBook line.

By the end of Jan I recon new MacBooks!

And I will guess they will be announced at this 'tablet' thing before the "one more thing" line comes out from Mr. Jobs mouth...

Yes, if there is an upgrade to MBP, it'll will be a processor change not a design change, as the unibody tooling set-up costed an absolute mint. There is quite a time delay between a new processor out from Intel and then being able to get them in quantity... Good example are 2.66 and 2.8 Quad iMacs that are still not shipping in normal quantities.

But you will also note apple got the new Xeon i7 processors, in quantity, before the actual processor launch.

They also got the special MacBook Air processors, in quantity, at launch of the Air.

Apple has orders for the chips in volume, they have working engineering samples and they are probably ready for production if not in production already.

Announced at the tablet conference. I put a (metaphorical) £5 on it.

Edit: AND the references to MacBook 6,1 and 6,2 have been found in 10.6.2.

So yes, I stand by it. New MacBook by the end of Jan. And hopefully, I'll have one too.

Yes, agree that the Macbook is now clearly outdated, and Apple likes to have a low-end model for student users, so a new MB could well be coming out as a slimmed down 13" MBP version. i7 processors may be available, but the 2.8 Quad certainly isn't in quantity; we still have wait list of more than 100 people...

the macbook has just had a refresh Tosh we are talking about the Macbook Pros here :) which had an update in june/july time last year, and as with most apple products they have a 6 month cycle, then the MBP is due for one as Concorde and the rest of the guys have said

Hmmm, my apologies. I can't recall a model line upgrade that has happened within 6 months of the last one, but your word in Steven Job's ear...

Average time between macbook pro updates - 200 days

Time since last update - 217 days

It's due an upgrade, I'm not convinced it'll be end of January but it's coming soon.
