Seems like there was a problem with my 2.2 MBP. Its going back to apple for a refund.

So I am now back in the market for another high end laptop. Question is now should I buy another MBP or wait for the revised SR MBP?

I would probably go for the 2.4 model with the bigger disk if I were to buy another MBP now. £1300 seems to get you a 2.4 Refurb?

Not sure what to do.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The first question you should be asking yourself is what was the 2.2 lacking that the 2.4 has.

If you feel you need the extra speed and HDD space then go for the bigger model, if not then it would be better to save your money.

Unless of cause you just want it because you can :p

If youre happy to wait a month or so, Apple might be releasing a new laptop in Jan (could be an ultra portable or touch screen tho).

The MBPs have had a small revision recently anyway, with the top end bumped up to 2.6 ghz with bigger hard drive option. I dont see them being updated until penryn comes along, which proly isnt for another few months.

More than anything its the HD, 120 was just a tad too small if I had to use boot camp although parallels seem to work fine. Speed certainly wasn't an issue. It's just £200 more over the 2.2 refurb.

Just where do you draw the line?

Thats the thing I would like a 2.x MBP Penryn but its knowing when they will be released. I could probably hold off until the middle of Jan but not much more.

I've been using all sorts of laptops but have now since got myself a 15" Macbook Pro 2.33ghz C2D with a 120GB drive and love it, If you like your system that you sent back just get that again.

I really dont think you will see much diffrence between 2.2 and 2.4. My only upgrades on mine would be the X1600 (8600GT) and maybe a bigger 7200rpm hard drive (have a 120GB 5400rpm) as i also use bootcamp. :D

Have to say i LOVE my MBP and OSX leapard and not really used XP/bootcamp.

:D

Get the 2.2. Anything else is overkill unless you plan on doing some more hardcore graphics editing for example. I have a 2.2 MBP and its perfectly good enough for what I require of it.

Maybe it won't be for him?

Buying a MAC is different to buying a PC. Your pretty much stuck with the performance unlike a PC where you can overclock the nuts off it.

I bought a 2nd 1.8 dual G5 powrmac last year and it soon ran out of steam with apps like Aperture.

Not saying there will be really any difference but the bigger hard disk, additonal ram on the graphics card and higher clocked cpu might be worth the £200 difference ??

I think you might have just answered your own question there, if money is not a problem then get the best you can. I just hate buying something and then after thinking i should have paid the extra for the better machine ;)

Yeah I agree , buying a PC is def more upgradeable than an equivelent iMac , but I thought we were talking laptops here ?
Anyway, my advice is get the best you can afford if you think its worth it, further down the line you won't regret it.

Not sure I agree. If I could have overclocked my dual powermac 1.8 I probably wouldn't have sold it so soon.

Overclocking can delay the upgrade. For instance my Q6600 runs at 2.4 standard but its capable of 4ghz. So there's plenty of room to extract some additional performance if needed in the future.

No in laptops, desktops I kinda agree tho.

Yeh that's true but thats a desktop how many laptops have you overclocked from 2.4 to 4ghz even the dells notebooks are a small increase when overclocking them.

Just an example when I had my powermac which was a desktop.

I believe the high end XPS laptop range overclocks very well. Ask Clone he had one if your interested

Would be nice to have the option do you not think? I'm sure the mobile C2D would overclock very well ;)
