Thinking of buying one and have some questions.

Was the MBP updated in 2011?

If I get an SSD would I be better getting one preinstalled and paying the extra money as i've just read that the SSD apple install caome with sutom firmware you won't get buying one yourself?

Can you upgrade the memory without voiding your warranty as is the case with upgrading the HD yourself?

Was updated twice, initially at the beginning of the year with the sandybridge CPU's and later on a small revision (bumping up the stock clock speed by 100mhz on most models and on the 15" model increasing the GPU from 6490 to 6750 i believe).

Would definitely buy your own SSD and install it. no custom firmware needed at all and its a lot cheaper than the Apple ones, also better performance as well.

Memory can be upgraded as well and does not void the warranty. Apple provide instructions on how to do this too. Again you save a small fortune buying your own compared to the upgrade price (I think circa £200 increase for 8GB from Apple compared to £35-40 buying your own and fitting it)

Ok. Hard Drive has to be installed by an authorised apple retailer right? I've been told by two different stores if I upgrade the HD myself I void the warranty, can you confirm this?

And does the new MBP supprt SATA III 6Gbps?

I can confirm it doesn't void the warranty as well, don't know why two different stores would say it would. Only if you break something are you on your own. Just did this simple google search and the top 3 links are from Apple themselves showing how to do it.

Changing your hard drive does not void your warranty. Both the HD and RAM are classed as user replaceable parts.

Buy an after market SDD. It will cost you less and you will get more performance. Same with the RAM.
