MBP Running Slow

I'm running a 2011 base spec 13" MBP, and it's been running slowly recently. As a bit of a newbie Mac user, I'm wondering if there's anything I've done to it/should have been doing to it to maintain it.

I get the spinning beach ball up quite often, particularly within Safari. What should I be looking into to speed things up?

I haven't used Onyx yet, but I ran the Repair Disk Permissions function, and it seems to be going notably quicker, which is a win. I'll leave it alone for now before risking Onyx
