Hello all!

Long story short, looking to trade in my MacBook Pro "Core i5" 2.4 15" Mid-2010 and buy a new 13" MacBook Air.

I have found a place online which is going to give me just over £500 for my current MBP which seems pretty good to me. Does anyone know of any outlets in the UK which offer a similar service? Would really like to buy the Air from a store.

Anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks.

Cool, yeah, hadn't really thought about that as an option so thanks. Going to take a trip into town tomorrow and see what I can find...

Wouldn't bother with a reserve as that will eat up profit. Will cost you a lot to have a reserve.

Only use eBay as a last resort due to the extortionate fees...

After my recent experiences, I'll add that while eBay is extremely expensive, be prepared to deal with plenty of time wasters who will offer you low-ball figures and claim that you would get that much on eBay anyway, depending on where you sell.

I'm a bit concerned about not having a reserve, I'd hate to see it go for a couple hundred quid and be kicking myself. Part of me wants to just trade it in via Apple and have no problems. Is there part of this forum where people can buy/sell hardware? I've heard there is a secret part which you can view after a certain amount of posts?

Yes you need 1000 posts before you can access the members market on here, so you have some way to go.

I used to remember it being 250? I guess too many disputes got raised with low post count members.

You could always try AVForums.

Ah right, thanks for the info. Will check out AV.

Thanks for the help guys.

Think I will get it all formatted then list it with a safe-ish reserve.

You need to boot into recovery or from the install disk, then open disk utility and set it to erase with the security option of writing zeros.

You really don't need a reserve, it will go for what it's worth just fine. High start prices and reserves put off bidders so it'll go for less. eBay fees suck but it tends to even out, and way more than trade-in anyway. Just be sure to send using Special Delivery (sod couriers, rubbish for claims and you need to pay extra for the right insurance).

You don't need to set a reserve, just set a higher starting price. List it on one of the 'free listing' weekends to minimise fees

Apple do a trade in service:

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/reuse_and_recycle

But you will likely get more as mentioned above selling privately.
