As title I currently have a macbook pro:

2.4ghz
4gb ram
9400+9600
320gb drive

Which I use as my main computer, its connected to my drobo with all data on.

NOW iv been thinking, its on my desk 85/90% of the time, so im pondering perhaps getting a mac mini ? the latest one I can get on student discount with a 2.53 processor, 4gb ram etc for what ...£570 ?, and then I could sell my MBP for about 900 ish, and pocket the cash while maintaining near on exacty the same system ?.....is what im thinking at the moment, also iv found out the mac mini can take 8gb ram, which would make it a little power house in all honesty, its used 99% of the time for internet, and photoshop, lightroom etc, clearly portability isnt a huge issue as I dont move it anywhere near as much as i thought i would, what would you do ? good idea ?

Didn't you get your MBP about the same time I did?

The only think you'll notice different is that if you game then you may find the 9400 on the Mac Mini with shared system memory doesn't quite cut the mustard but having said that I've set up some games on my spanky new Mini and it's working really well both in OS X (The Sims 3, Eve Online) and in Windows 7 (handful of Steam games).

Apart from that, I think it's a realistic move.

Well yeah it makes sense I think, as for gaming iv just put together a cheap windows gaming box for around £370, I say cheap its a 3.4ghz quadcore core 2, 8gb ram, ati 5770 ! lol, so in terms of hardware its the nuts, but im defo a mac man bar gaming now, if only apple would increase there hardware :(

So I think that for gaming and encoding and mac mini for everything else makes sense I think ?

Hmmm had a look at the mini online in uni, its 596 ?! I thought it was a 14% discount ? :(, hmmm nearly 600, only leaves me ~300 profit, which isnt to bad I guess, bit strange its not 14% as used to be ?

Are you sure you weren't on the FE site rather than HE?

I've been thinking about a mini as a HTPC but it still seems pointless until Apple start delivering HD movies without the need for an ATV. <sigh> They can do it in the US, what's wrong with the UK?

I followed a thread on AvForums about a discount voucher for Very (use to be Littlewoods) for Apple products. When used in conjunction with Quidco or Top Cash Back peeps were getting about 30% discounts! Mac Mini's were working out to just over £500. Worth a look.
