MBP Whining

Hey folks,

This is a weird problem that I've meant to post about in a good while - but was just wondering if anyone has had something similar and got it sorted.

I'm still under warranty (expires December) so I'm considering sending my MBP back to get it repaired / replaced.

Anyway, the noise I get is usually from cold booting my MBP. It is like a low-level whiny sound which can get louder or totally disappear depending on what way I move the screen.

It's not a major issue but it's annoying when it starts and you usually have to tilt the screen at a unfavourable angle for it to go away - then it will eventually go away.

I recorded it a good while ago: here (best heard near the end, I think I was tilting the screen throughout)

Any ideas as to what it might be?

Cheers. :)

It's a really common problem with MBP's, it's usually CPU whining, but take it into Apple and see if you can get a replacement for it.

Thanks for the replies. :)

I had heard about the CPU whine before but didn't think it would have been this, as it's physically more 'hinge' related. I mean the sound can be totally changed through the slightest of movement.

Now that you mention it though, I suppose the whole case would vibrate from the CPU and it would travel to different parts of it.

It's my only computer at the moment and I don't have an Apple store anywhere in the country - so sending it somewhere will most likely cost a small fortune for something they might not even fix.

I have phoned up before in regards to it (and other problems I was having at the time, which seem to have rectified themselves) and they said to post it up to an certified repairs centre - and that's the hurdle I fell at the last time.

Small comfort in that its recognised at least.

Ahh, didn't realise you were in a different country. Will you not be in England before December to get it looked at?

I'm sure you'll get used to the whine after a while :p

I doubt I'll travel over to England just for a visit to the Genius' bar. (I'm in N.I) :D

I've had to listen to it for a while - In an ideal world I would contact Apple and Steve would swing me an e-mail saying: 'Boom! Have a Mac-Pro as means of a sorry. This thing, is just gorgeous.'

Can't see that happening though.

It wouldn't happen like that... not enough "BOOM" or "screamer" adjectives in the message.

Give it a slap- stupid Mac! But serious, I noticed my fans kicked in more often at first following the most recent firmware updates. However due to sleep issues I decided that I should just get it booked in for a check-up. One good thing about Macs is that under Applecare if theres a problem you can just take it into an Apple Authorised Repairer and they'll book it in there and then- just like a car! None of this phoning back and forth although you do have to pay extra for on-site repairs
