MC 2014 Game Of The Year Is - Smash Bros.

I've never understood the appeal of the Smash Bros franchise, last one I bought was back in the Gamecube days, must be a Marmite thing.
 
I really want to like this and might buy it. Is it a game that clicks when you invest a bit of time with it? I played the N64 one but never got in to it.
 
It's a game that only really works with a lot of people playing. Ie great when I was a kid with my 2 brothers.

Is online implementation still terrible on wii? (voice chat?)
 
Online works an absolute treat.

I'm new to it - never played Smash before - took me a good few hours to bond with it, plus I'm 43 yrs old so it's took time to retune the reaction times (though Bayo 2 awoke the skills beforehand).

To me it's better than Mariokart 8 - and that's saying something - and I adore Mariokart, Smash is fun but surprisingly deep and technical too.

I'm still a noob but starting to win some of my online expeditions, slowly but surely. I take pride in the fact I'm starting to spank players half my age :p
 
Just started playing this morning. Getting a little lag in games though. Not sure why. 3DS XL

EDIT: After playing for few hours I can safely say it's nothing like the N64 version. Not sure if it's screen size but it doesn't feel the same.
