MCE and Catalyst woes

I hope someone can help me here!

I've been using MCE for a while now and for the most part it's great. However, a couple of months ago I decided to go for a larger HDD that necessitated a reinstall. As part of this I installed the Catalyst 7.4 drivers and suddenly I get no display, then I get one then I don't.

I'm using a Connect 3D AGP 9600 ATi that has previously worked no problem at all. After two months of my HTPC lying there doing nothing I embark on a reinstall. All goes well until I install the Catalyst drivers (this time 7.5) and I get no display at all - not on the general monitor I used for the reinstall OR my Toshiba 32" LCD via VGA. I can't even roll back as I get no display at all. The HTPC appears to be working okay as I can here all the sounds it would normally make.

I'm at the end of my tether now - I thought a reinstall was bound to work.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Snash

Can you boot into safe mode and remove them ?

Keep hitting F8 just as the bios information is finishing and you should get a menu to let you boot into safe mode, just incase you didn't know.

Problem is I can't even see the POST :(

If you don't get any display on POST then it has nothing to do with the drivers. I would try the card in another computer if possible, or use a different monitor. However, it sounds like it is probably dead.

That was my initial thought when all this carry on started however it had been working then n picture then reinstall and okay until I installed the updated drivers. I would roll back if I could but can't even get POST.

One thing - when I did sometimes get a picture it would give me an error message along the lines of "colours set at wrong depth" or something like that but I never knew how to fix it.

Looks like another reinstall coming up. Any clues on what settings to use in catalyst for VGA output to a LCD TV?

As the drivers are not loaded until windows starts it cannot be the drivers which are causing your G/C not to work.

The likely problem is that the effort of loading catalyst killed off an already weak card.

Didn't realise that (but makes perfect sense now I think about it :p ). So time for a new card.

Need one that's AGP, passive cooling and MCE compliant - any thoughts?

Thanks for your help Bomag - appreciated :)

I think they do passive 7600GT AGP cards. This is the lowest nV card which supports all purevideo acceleration features. However if I were buying now I would go for a 8600 GTS as it will accelerate hidef media much better.
