mce coded/decoder n00b

I have a fresh install of MCE on my mini pc.

What should I install on it?

On my main pc I have found certain codecs to perform slower than others, but I know little about this to be honest.

Does anyone have any adivce about what dvd encoder to install (if it matters) and what codecs will allow me to watch mp4, avi etc.

Dont think it really matters, its just trial and error really to see which works best with your setup.

I use the nivida dvd decoder, seems to give me the best performance/quality.

and then I just FFDShow to play the other codecs, ie xvid, divx etc.
