mce video problems

hi
just formatted from xp to mce, i used to play videos divx avi dvds etc on xp no problems, now using mce everytime i open up a file(avi divx etc) or dvd the pc freezes then it take 3-4 minutes to shut down the media player via task manager(vlc windows media player, or power dvd) when the media player is closed the pc behaves great again,can play mp3s music etc fine
also tried to install dvd shrink when that opens up the pc locks up as well
any ideas? dont want to go back to xp

well i have uninstalled about everthing still the same
just the plain mce but fully updated
any ideas

well i have jsut uninstalled the latest nvidia mce drivers and gone back to xp 67.--ish runs fine now, will these drivers be ok for mce or will i lose some functions?
