im sure someone could probably try and describe it but your best messing with the thing and getting an understanding of how it works, DNS is a very important piece in making sure active directory works, if you dont get it then chances are you wont be passing your course, unfortunately the diagrams in MS books of triangles with lines drawn in between probably confuse things more
theres a few pointers that are worth knowing
-the dns zone is used when locating DCs and a GC, those _msdcs etc folders in the dns zone of your domain are enumerated to find say the GC for the current site and the pdc emulator
-when you have subdomains in a forrest, the subdomain doesnt have all the roles
-a domain controller in the subdomain, needs to logon to the parent domain before it will function and to be able to locate the roles that reside in the parent domain, hence needs to be able to locate domain controllers in the parent
-when designing your dns setup the parent and child domains therefore need to be able to see each others zones for the _msdcs information
