MCTS Exam 70-238 - Configuring Exchange 2007

I'll be booking this one soon, anyone done it recently ?

How did you find it ? More difficult than the average MS exam ?

Any practical stuff or mainly multiple guess ?

Any area in particular i should be swotting up on ?

Not done it, but I would strongly suggest getting a virtual machine up and running with Exchange 2007 on as it is very different to Exchange 2003. (Unlike 2003 which was very similar to 2000)

Yeah i've done the course, and i've got it running here in some VM's. It is very different as you say, what with the server roles etc.

If anyone is wondering why the admin and routing group have such wierd names i'm willing to share the secret for a price

It does manage to be slow, cluttered and counter-intuative at the same time.

Maybe they do it on purpose to make powershell more attractive.

Chap i'm sitting opposite at the moment worked for MS India until recently, he was one of the engineers who you speak to when you log a support call with MS on Exchange.

He's got some interesting things to say, especially about Google. If they were caught using it, HR took action against them, yet the MS search didn't even index their own knowledgebase properly !

Prefer Exchange 2007 to 2003 it's just easier.

And once the setup is done you should be able to do everything user related from the AD (obviously with Server 2008).

The only niggle I have is that on 2003 all the users have to be setup in it and it's no the quickest of things to do.

As in manage mailboxes etc ?

Nah, you have to do that in the console or shell. Can't do it in ADC as far as i can tell. Maybe i'm missing something.

I've sat 70-236, 70-237 and 70-238, only passed the last two though. As far as exams go they are like any other MS exam in format. I used TechNet and MSExchange.org for resources (there was no publications as I took the exams in beta form).

Any questions and i'll try and answer them without breaking the NDA.

Its actually the 236 exam i'm going to take, i made a typo in the thread title.

Any questions on the new UM / VOIP stuff ? If not i'll not even bother reading up on it.

Is there a lot of powershell based questions ? To what extent do you need to remember the commands ?

Sorry mate think you mis-read. I was referring to Server 2008 where you will be able to manage them using the AD. Currently in 2003 you can't do this.

Cos i'm running my Exchange box on server 2008 and you can't manage mailboxs inside ADC. Its on a 2003 domain, and the 2008 server isn't a DC but thats they way its seems to be.

Okay Powershell is the underlying foundation of the Exchange GUI so anything you do in the GUI you can do with cmdlets. I would STRONGLY suggest you pay particular attention to these.

With regards to what to study all I can say is follow the preparation guide:

What percentage of questions are on EMS ? I've heard 75% !!!!

What cmdlets are questioned ?

Obviously the mailbox management ones, but what about storage group creation ? LCR ? How about transport rules etc ?

To what extent are the questions, do you need to know the various switches and arguments to new-publicfolder for example ?
