Yes, the x2, x3 and x4 signifies the number of cores. Though a higher core count doesent always mean better performance accross different cpu's, it almost certainly does with cpu's of the same model.
Unless of course you put a crazy o.c on the x3 or something.

I have an AMD Athlon x4 640, go for it! Good for everything, except overclocking...

Athlon 640's are decent chips. Usually clock to around 3.7GHz, same as all Athlon quad cores.
