mdadm vs built in raid setup

Just got my 2Tb disk for my HP Microserver, just following the steps AtomicBanana used, and he used mdadm however when I was trying put a partition on the disks in the Disk Utility on Ubuntu 10.10 there is an option in there to create a RAID array.

Is one better than the other? I know with mdadm if you lose your unbuntu install you can rebuild it, rescan for the array and it finds it, can you do the same thing with the built in one?
