MDP to DVI/HDMI

Hi guys,

I was about to order a tower from a previous post, but when going through in my head how it all connects I noticed that the monitor I have (Apple Cinema LED 27'' Display) is build in with only a MDP/ThunderBolt connection.

Looking online I can only convert it using a cable (if it is not built in) or get a GFX card which supports MDP.

Anyone able to assist? I was about to order the parts for my budget of 600-700 for a tower only, but noticed this issue... kinda stopped me in my tracks.

(sorry for double post)

Si

You're better off just getting a graphics card that supports DP/Mini DP (same connection, just a different shaped port).

What parts have you been looking at? I'm pretty sure most AMD graphics cards aimed at playing games with have had build in DP or mini DP ports for the last 4 years or so.

You can just get a cheap converter from HDMI or MDP to whatever you need (not DVI-I or VGA though) - should work just fine.

Hang on, sorry, I'm mixed up. Your monitor supports ONLY mini-DP/DP? The picture has a HDMI port?

So my monitor has MDP cable to my current MAC (to be replaced).

I can't change the cable from monitor.
Need a supported MDP or way of connecting to anything the GFX has using a converter.

I am struggling to figure out how.

(edit: my monitor does not have a HDMI cable, the HDMI from the computer is for connecting to a different monitor... i don't want to change my monitor.)

Ahh I understand now, yeah that GFX card has a DP port but you could get a MDP to HDMI, MDP to DP, MDP to DVI or whatever converter to whack onto the end of the cable and into your gfx card.

Bang on... i cannot find one that doesn't require my cable from the monitor to be replaced... can you? :(

You don't need to change your cable, most AMD cards come with mini-DP ports already, the ones that don't sometimes have a DP-mini-DP adapter in the box.

If not, you can buy them for about a fiver. You will not have to replace the cable on your display.

If you're planning to buy the 270X from the other thread which comes with normal Displayport, search for "displayport male to mini displayport female". This will allow you to connect the built in MDP cable to the normal DP on the GPU. On the rainforest it's around £6, OcUK doesn't seem to sell these.
