Hey guys,

I live in the country side so bb speed has never been amazing.
Im on BT and my neighbour is on Sky.

I have always had a better line than them for some reason, but now they are getting 1.7 meg down while i am stuck with 0.9 meg down.

Im thinking that its my BT home hub (new white one) while they have the default sky router.

Would it be wise to get a new router? As i would like a better down speed.

We are the same distance from the exchange (give or take 10 yards) so i do not understand if they are able to give a better speed just because of provider.

Any suggestions or thoughs are welcomed,

Thank you,
Em

Which package are they on? If it's LLU that could explain it. BT use various profile systems such as RAMBO so that if you sync at 8Mbps (for example) you'd only actually see 7.2Mbps due to the profile you get put onto (and overheads). Sky's LLU system doesn't use any such systems, and you basically get what you connect at.

I'll leave the technical ins and outs to someone more qualified, but that's my idea. Don't forget that you could literally have two phone lines in the same house, never mind next door, and have a massive difference between them. Pairs, line type and quality (copper v aluminium, condition and age etc), routing, and internal wiring all play a part in what speeds you get. You can't just say "next door get X so I should too". Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

That said, all else being equal Sky LLU (if that's what the neighbour is on) might see you a small speed boost going off what you've said. :)

Do you think that the router has anything to do with it?

I have never tried anything other than the home hubs provided.

I doubt it. Virtually every router available today is capable of at least 8Mbps. The home hub certainly wouldn't limit you to less than 1Mbps just because it's a home hub. My mate is on BT (against my advice I hasten to add) and their homehub gives them the full 8 meg connection speed. Much more likely a difference in provider (LLU v BT ipstream) or wiring (your neighbour's being better). My money's on the provider; BT are Bloody Terrible.

Yea i think it must be the provider then.

Mainly because I had a better connection than them until recently. So the wiring isnt an issue i dont think.

Hmm i have no idea how much longer my BT contract is. will look into changing / have a change with my neighbour.

I take it you've plugged the router into the master socket and/or tested via the test socket?

Wiring may well be the issue as changes can take place somewhere on your line between you and the exchange - and not to say degradation withing the house. First check out using your master sockets base socket. I t always pays to have a second modem/router cheap enough used Bt charge big if its within your side of the line
