Hi,

I'm thinking of replacing breakfast and lunch with an alternative instead of what I'm eating now which is cereal usually granola for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. This is for the purpose of losing weight I am currently 14.3 stone so overweight my height is 5'11

I am exercising, walking 2 miles a day most days and running every couple of days although I'm not very good I've built it up to two miles and yesterday managed just shy of 2.5 miles so getting better but the weight just isn't coming off

I have health reasons to do this and been advised by Dr of gastroenterology to lose weight ASAP, it's all very strange because before COVID I was a gym goer and pretty well built but working from home and stopping going to the gym saw me pack on the timber and unfortunately this has affected me despite not being massively over weight it seems my body is affected by being overweight and is causing me health issues

Can anyone recommend meal replacement please? Absolutely no idea where to start! No budget In mind but would prefer to avoid subscription at this stage in case I want to try different things

Thanks

Huel black edition for breakfast
Huel Mac n Cheese for lunch

The Huel subscriptions are no commitment, so you can order at the subscription price and immediately pause, modify, or cancel it.

The recent price rise is making is harder to recommend though....I'm sticking with it as it's really enhanced my training.

Great stuff thanks I'll have a look at Huel, not sure I could have the same thing everyday though that would slowly drive me insane hopefully they have more choice

Is there a subscription I should look out for that will cover what I need? I'll have a look anyway and see what's what

Have you calculated calories you are getting from the granola and sandwiches
- some granolas have a lot of sugar, is portion size correct ? and, similarly ensure sandwiches don't have excesses - butter/mayo/meats...
I usually have porridge several times a week very predictable calory intake.

I have IBS and porridge triggers it for some reason, I love the stuff and used to eat it all the time. Might try it again and see if things have changed as it's been a while.

Yes granola is full of sugar, need to get off it but a much smaller amount is more filling than other cereals in a larger amount

I realise this isn't the question you asked, but if I were you I'd push breakfast later and later until you can do IF and cut breakfast out altogether. An alternative to that is going for a fatty coffee in the morning as it is provides satiety but with absolutely zero glycemic response, so isn't breaking the fast in the way other food would be.

Interesting thanks, what do you mean "fatty" coffee? Lots of milk?

I thought breakfast was important to keep metabolism up but maybe I have that wrong

breakfast - relation with IBS was told - plain puffed-wheat, which I've recently got for them in js, but
as an alternative to porridge , am giving them some pin head oatmeal which is half way between that and ready-brek.

£50 to cover just breakfasts for a month, I had no idea it was that expensive that's not doable for me

MyProtein also do one, it's not as nutritious, but it's decent enough and a lot cheaper. I only really have it to bulk up calories on days where i need the extra rather than replacing another meal, but could be worth a look.

Could mix things up by adding frozen fruit to break up the flavours.

My wife is a big fan of the Sun Power vegan protein off amazon. She's got a dairy allergy so it works well for her if she blends it with soya or coconut milk.

It doesn't have many carbs in, so you can always add some oats and blend it for a wider nutritional profile.

I actually really enjoy them and I have them on the days when I work out.

Whole fuel blend was a good alternative to Huel when I was on it a couple of years back, less sweet than the Huel of the time.

Thanks I'll look into these

This is interesting because Amazon makes it easy to buy but isnt it just a protein shake rather than a meal replacement?

Trying to cut out bread would make a big difference, I'm surprised that doesn't trigger your IBS. I do IF, finish eating around 6pm and usually don't eat until 1-2pm next day. Luckily I can eat porridge so that is currently my 'go to' lunchtime meal and with added fruit only a couple of hundred calories. Then a decent meal in the evening. I'd definitely try to get off the granola, delicious but full of sugar! If you have time walking is much easier than running, I walk around 10 miles a day at work.
I do use Huel occasionally, 400 cals in a shake so easy to keep track, but it is getting expensive if doing it every day. Big weight loss thread here if you've not seen it:

It probably does trigger it mildly I do put up with it most days but porridge has previously made it go mental.

Cutting out bread will be really difficult, love the stuff. I need to try porridge again and see what happens it's been a couple of years, used to love overnight porridge but couldn't have it for breakfast and lunch even if it doesn't effect IBS because I would get bored of it so still need an alternative for one really, hopefully lunch to cut down on the bread!
