Mechanic? Electric window problem...

'98 Mondeo, front electric windows. On setting off tonight I rolled both down to clear condensation, but only the passenger window rolled back up. Driver side was stuck in the door and not coming back up. Doesn't appear to be any blockage and was smooth in winding down. I think maybe electrical but I'm not sure.

I tried different combinations of engine/ignition on/off and gave it a wiggle as best I could to try to encourage it. The window motor makes a slight whine if I try to "wind down" further, but nothing at all on trying to wind it up. Passenger side remains fully functional. Is it a bad idea to get some grippers and give it a real good pull whilst pressing the button? Anything I can try to avoid taking it in?

60 mile motorway drive was no fun with my driver side window down all the way I tell you!

If you know where abouts the motor is behind the door card, give it a good smack and press the button at the same time.

Ah ha yes, this I also semi attempted. Will get more aggressive with it in the morning though!

Anyone any ideas as to where this is roughly? I don't have a stethoscope

I would be tempted to try and bypass the switch (remove the switch and touch the wires together

) just to get it wound up. Since it's not making any noise when you try it, it sounds like the switch has probably failed.

sounds like the regulator has come apart, door panel off time.

Had this with my Fiesta, window could go down, but not back up, turned out the wire on the switch had come a bit loose or had a dry connection, either way unplugging the switch and plugging back on sorted it. (that was found out after i had dismantled the doors to gain access to the motor :rolleyes:

)

does it try to come up then stop, or does it just never even twitch?

I don't know the mechanics of how an electric window works, whether there's a belt in there, or if a motor drives an arm attached to the window or what. So I can't explain what might have happened. But basically I battered the hell out of the top inside plastic panel of my door whilst pressing up. And on about the fifth smack it came up. Brute, unknowledgeable force wins!
