right ive pretty much finished my UCAS application apart form picking the 6 courses.

im set on doing the mechanical engineering course h300

however the ucas search feature is rubbish and wont let me search by the amount of tariff points needed.

i dont fancy looking at every single university on the site. (started and its taking aggges)so im looking for some recomendations of places to study mech engineering.

so if anyones studied this or know someone then i can use these recomendations and research into the uni more when im off tommorow

at college we just got told about and visited really good places like liverpool and sheffield where i cant go as i wont get 340 points even if a miracle happens  :p

any help or recommendations would be great

Sheffield is good for engineering, I'm doing electronic myself, but I do know that the mechanical department is quite decent - been down there a few times - I had a friend who started Mechanical but then quit...he said it was ok too.

As for entry requirements, put it down as a choice anyway if you are interested in going there, of course. The entry requirements for my course were AAB but I got a bit less than that (screwed up some exams :o ) and I got in ok. Most uni's will cut you a bit of slack :)

yeah i went on an open day to sheffield and it pretty much sounded amazing ,

then at the end of the day they told me id need DDD or DDM in my national diploma

ouchhhhhhh is how i felt, shame is that id of managed that easily if i didnt mess up my first year by leaving to work :/

ill most likely put it down on my list of 6 because id really love to go there and its made me work as hard as possible so far this year.

I'm at Loughborough Uni at this very moment in time doing Mech Eng (MEng) and all I can say is - its brilliant. Course is great, interesting, a fair amount of "hands on" stuff, and most of all relevent! There is SO much research and links with industry here its staggering. ALL of your lecturers will either be in research or have been in the past so its great to hear little bits of research thrown into lectures. Also - of the 150 people who are on the course about 90% of us do a placement year not because we have to but because companies really want us lboro grads! Its nice :)

andi your around the Teesside area ?

when i was at Teeside tertiary college (now Middlesbrough college) i was recommended looking at Northumbria as one of the good ones local-ish (that was a few years back and was for mech eng btw)

Anyway advice dont go to teesside :D

haha yep im at middlesbrough college now :(

ive put northumbria down already :)

the rest of my group went on a visit there last year and looked good/is localish, sadly that was after i sort of quit before coming back.

and im trying to avoid teesside at all costs :p there must be a reason you only need half the points you need at other unis :o :p

Cambridge, Bath, Loughbrough, Manchester , Glasgow, Newcastle, UCL.

/Oh you didn't mean uni's you had to be good at to goto.

hehehe i did a course called 'engineering 2000' a few years back (basically a ND with a few extra's), brian & gav still about ?

i went to germany with brian for a two week booze trip *cough* i mean a exchange trip, quality bloke imo.

not sure we only have 2 instructors for our whole course :/

kung fu tony and ian clarkson the worlds most oldest smelliest horrible man haha

most the engineering staff have been got rid off as the new head of engineering is an ex mechanic and is trying to make the college swing that way.

and yeah kahn i mean unis that arent right up the top but are still respectable :(

Then I would look at doing a Foundation year at a good uni.

OH Tony D is a legend...one of the nicest blokes i have ever met.

edit: woops i will stop dragging your thread OT now sorry :D .... just dont go to teesside, most of the lecturers have bad attitudes.

Mech Eng is excellent here in notts, but you will probably require AAB. Im doing a similar course but without the thermo and fluid ******, but with more materials and manufacturing. Plus my offer was only ever BBC :D

The university of nottingham is awesome for enginerring. actually on second thoughts don;t come here there are far too many guys, we need more hot female engineers.

thanks allot for that link Kahn !

id never even thought about a foundation degree but will defiantly look into it more in the morning .

its a shame i got bored and left last year because i was getting top marks in everything until then , thats only reason they let me come back :o .

and yeah tony d is possibly the nicest most down to earth guy anyone could ever meet and his life stories should be made into a feature film !

"well aye, we was walking home from the pub like , minding our own buisness. and 8 men came runnin at us with baseball bats like........"

oh snap! I'm an MEnger doing Mech Engineering at lufbra too (3rd year), I've gotta say I'm loving it too! I applied to Loughborough, Sheffield, Leicester, Liverpool and UMIST, all top uni's, it was a close tie between sheffield, UMIST and loughborough for me, loughborough won in the end because it had the best campus (plus sheffield wanted 320 points from me, which wasn't gonna happen :p)

bradford uni do certified BEng endorsed by the institute of mechanical engineers. My friend did it and now hes working for amec.

to be honest with you it doesnt matter these days where you do your degree as there is a massive shortage of engineers in the Uk. i mean a HUGE shortfall.

I myself never did not do a degree, only did a HNC in Civil Engineering and i did that at Teesside. It was good and is endorsed by the local firms (Halcrow, Atkins, Arup, McAlpine).
I have 4yrs experience in highways engineering (basically designing and maintaining roads) and am now working as a consultant on a £50k plus package.

It really is a lucative market at the moment and with the olympic games construction due to start it is only going to get better (£5.xbillion to spend on the olympics). Basically that should create a lot of opportunities till 2012 and beyond!

I'd say that you're going to struggle with mech eng if you have poor A levels.

If your A levels are poor because you struggle with the work then you'll really struggle with Mech eng wherever you study it. If they're poor because you've not been applying yourself then you'll be much better off in the long run going to one of the unis with a good reputation (I went to loughborough but did automotive engineering rather than mechanical) and doing the foundation year first.

No worries, at manchester now you have some very good lectures as Manchester and UMIST were merged (happened in my 3rd yr) so you should get the benefit of PBL from the Manchester side and pure maths and teaching from UMIST.

I was a UMIST kid :)
