Okay so my birthday is soon and I was going to treat myself to a mech keyboard but I have no idea what to get. Preferably i would like it to be slightly smaller than my G11.

No Budget.
Wrist rest needed.

Red or Blue Switch.

Red,

Corsair Vengeance K90 as it has a full wrist rest and the lower model does not.
Qpad MK-85

Blue,
Qpad MK-80

I have started using a Ducky board recently with black switches and it is certainly worth considering the blacks.
blue switches are good but i prefer reds for general use. the black switches are about the same as a red but do not bottom out as easily as there is more resistance towards the bottom end of the keystroke.
I personally find them easier for touchtyping and exactly the same for gaming on.

that said, the Qpad boards are very good and have a lot of features.

the ozone strike and mionix zibal are identical bar the green backlight on the zibal and both come with wrist rests.
both have black switches and are reasonably priced.
the Zibal was £150 until recently too so there is a decent saving if you want the backlight.

Just got the QPAD MK-85 and it's hands down the best keyboard that I have ever used. Well worth it if you can justify the massive price tag.

Thanks for the replies. I wish the K90 was full mech as it would then more than likely be the top of my list.

Umm I really dont know why mechanical keyboards are so expensive, because back in the 90's they where all mechanical.. So what, were buying medieval hardware again just cos ppl say that the clicky keyboards that we all used 15 odd yrs ago, says "you got to get 1 of these, it will last you a lifetime". Yeah back in those days things were made to last. So to get things that will last a lifetime, your expecting to pay 20x more then it was back in the olden days... I think ppl are having a laugh here guys. Next it will be the good old microswitch joysticks for £200

What is this world coming to, I ask you:eek:

I guess it's become fashionable again. I'd like to own a mech myself, though I've never tried one. If they last longer and feel nice, why not. Everyone I know on forums who has one say they couldn't go back to rubber dome after mech. What's the saying.. Once you've gone black* you never go back. :p

(*or red or cherry blue)

It's for the comfort and performance compared to rubber dome.

I didnt like the clicky sound so much, when I used the schools 286's/386's PCs. A analog keyboard would be nice tho,, but Im guessing that would cost 4times more:D

Yeah, but mech keyboards used to be standard and cheap. If they can be produced cheaply, why aren't they currently sold cheaply? Surely the laws of free market competition should mean that at least one company would be undercutting others and selling them cheaper, assuming there is a very large profit margin? (indicated by the fact that they used to be cheap)

Yeah the price is taking the mick a little... but the build quality on my recent purchases is far high than my 90s mechanical keyboards.

That said my original mech keyboard which appears to have a certain type of clears cost me around £14 lol... and the ozone and filcos I've bought are pushing £100.

Still hard to beat a decent mechanical cherry black for FPS gaming tho it doesn't half suck for typing on compared to my old one :(

EDIT: Ouch after posting this I realised I've spent over £200 on... keyboards :S

I was always very skeptical about the advantages of a mechanical keyboard, having owned a Logitech G15 for a good few years now I wanted a change, I checked the reviews and looks of well over 30 keyboards and the QPAD MK-85 came out on top for me. The clicking isn't the old-school clicking of an IBM board to me, it's a very nice sound and with the cherry red switches it's not as loud as a nuke.

Could I go back to a none-mechanical keyboard, I won't say never, but it would be very difficult.
