Hey Guys,

I hope I am posting this in the right area?

I am thinking of buying a mechanical keyboard as my current, a Razer Lycosa is beginning to fade fast. Please no competitor names. there range of Filco keyboards which I believe are up there with some of the best? They do look very nice and I have read many reviews which suggest that they are as good as they are made out to be.

I have also been pointed by a friend, in the direction of the Steel Series 6GV2, and have been told that this would be just as good, and almost half the price that the Filco costs?!

I realise that they both use Cherry MX switches, and both are very weighty and sturdy. I just want advice on whether the Filco is so good, it really warrants an additional money?! I have no way of trying a mechanical board before I purchase one, and as a result, have read as many reviews of all the most common types of Cherry MX Switches that are used, and am torn between Blue's (I like the clicky sound I have heard in video's and the tactile feel they supposedly give) And Blacks, (as I believe most gamers prefer them due to the heaviness of the actuation force needed to press them, therefore making them better against accidental key presses, especially when typing etc)

If anyone can please offer some good practical advise regarding making a definitive decision, I would be very grateful.

Cheer's :)

firstly remove the competitors name.
i bought a mech keyboard (a qpad mk-50) i think its great. lots of gamers uses red or blue.
what is ur max budget?

What type of games do you play? I've tried blues and black, I play fps, and games like league of legends, do quite a lot of typing too, I would choose blues for myself every time, loved the click, great tactile feel always know when ur pressing stuff, just make sure u can use it late in to the night, I ended up selling mine when when we had a baby.

Hey,

Sorry for the mistake in mentioning the competitors name, I didn't realise at the time?!

My max budget is approx £150. I have just read so many good things about Filco, and I like the simplistic style of the boards. I mainly play FPS games, on and offline. The crux of this is, is am I wasting a shed load of money on a keyboard if I buy a Filco? Or do you think the price is justified? I was very close to ordering a 6GV2, but as I so often do in these scenarios, I rush in, and don't weigh up thing's properly!! I really fancy blue's too, but just how loud are they?

I guess I want the best keyboard for my budget, as I like danewesley am about to become a father, and as a result, have steadily upgraded my rig's OS drive to an SSD, improved the memory capacity, bought a 7970 (rushed in earlier this year LOL, wished I had waited for the 680!!) And this is like the icing on the cake, as I won't be upgrading anything for approx 18 months!!

Many thanks for both your comments, and again, I was not aware when I posted originally, regarding the competitors name.

Thank's!!

I have a Filco.

I don't game but love the keyboard (I'm on it 8+ hours a day as I work from home). If I were buying again, I'd probably look elsewhere as the printed key surfaces are wearing away (the A has gone completely) and look for either laser etched or backlit keys. It is such a shame that an excellent keyboard is spoiled by a manufacturing shortcut.

Initially I bought a Blackwidow which I got rid of after less than a month. I liked the blue switches but the noise is really annoying (loudest out of all switches).
Then I got a TT eSports MEKA G1 (black switches) which I really like; solid build and very nice for gaming.
I wanted to get a SteelSeries 6Gv2 but a friend of mine has it and apparently the letters on the keys are washing off quite quickly.

Aren't these made in the same factory?

This is correct, several other keyboards are made by the same OEM too. There is this myth about build quality, mainly because everyone else wanted to make cheaper keyboards and make more profit. If you look at some early keyboards by some gaming brands, they were shockers. Now though, the game has changed a lot, with brands looking at the build quality as an importance.

I have reviewed a lot of keyboards, some have been very meh, but the latest CM storm gear is very good, as is the Corsair, though Corsair are well known for this.
