I was looking to get a new keyboard when my friend told me to get a mechanical one as they are "much better". I couldn't really get out of him why they were much better but he said that once you have one you would never go back to a regular one.

So, how and why are they better?
Also, what are the differences between the switches?
I use my keyboard for gaming about 60% of the time and typing 40%. which switch would be the best for this?

Thanks

To try and answer this question I bought a sampler kit of the four common Cherry MX switches: red, black, blue, and brown.

If all I was doing was gaming, I would probably get Red, but I mostly type, so think for me it will be Blue or Brown. Even with samples in my hand if the different types, I'm finding it really hard to choose.
