Hi I need a media center operating system that is not windows.

It is mostly for music so needs good sound quality and has to start up reasonably quickly. It also needs to be able to browse the internet and watch dvd's.

Something like mediaportal but a stand alone OS.

Does such a thing exist? Its for a sony HTPC thingy my dads had for ages.

Thanks :)

Rather than just pointing them out, can you tell me about your experience of them?

And....

Media

While LinuxMCE is NOT a Media Center, it can serve you with your media, Video and Audio in any location at anytime you like. Transfer Music from one Room to another or let it "magically" follow you. This also works with your Audio and favorite TV show.
Did you actually use it or just type in google

Linux MCE (Media Center Edition)
LinuxMCE is an integrated home theater/home security/home automation/telephone PBX/intercom system for your home. It incorporates MythTV, Pluto home automation, Motion security surveillance, Asterisk PBX, VDR video disk recorder, and other home automation/security/theater packages in an integrated platform. It is available in 32 and 64 bit versions. LinuxMCE can run either as a standalone Home Theater PC or can co-ordinate a fully networked home, using the networking capabilities that are intrinsically part of the Kubuntu Linux OS. For more info see the LinuxMCE website.

I have seen it running by several people but have no personal experience.

WTF why did it say its not a media center then. Stupid website. Oh well i dont need all that other crap im going to give mythbuntu a try.

handbags at dawn?

Seriously though - the way this thread has gone so far...

OP asked:
"Does such a thing exist?"

Then OP replied to him/herself that Mythbuntu looked fugly (paraphrased...)

... after waiting a whole four hours on a forum (and remember, kids - this isn't IRC)...

OP posted:
"So there isnt one?

:("

Brummie responded:
"afaik mythbuntu can be made to look pretty much howthe hell you like with a bit of effort."

Then OP responded:
"Rather than just pointing them out, can you tell me about your experience of them?

And....

...Did you actually use it or just type in google".

For a start - that's not what you asked. Brummie was trying to be helpful by answering your question. Mythbuntu / MythTV are very well known in the OSS community.

If you're going to be ****y about it, I won't be surprised about it if you don't get any help.

Sorry, looking over it I was a bit of a bitch :p I was under the impression linux MCE wasnt a media center as it says that on there website so I thought brummie had no experience of it as he reccomended it as one.

i use linuxmce, but I do not think it is what your looking for. XBMC would be better....
