Have mainly heard good things about mythbuntu, however haven't had chance to setup a dedicated media centre pc. Currently I'm running all sorts of things on a windows pc...TV/media stuff is currently taken care of by GB-PVR, this may be handy for streaming from the media centre pc to windows pcs in future if you have this planned.

There is also an xbmc live edition, check the xbmc website. You can try it before you install all from the cd.

Mythbuntu is fricking awesome but it can be a real biiaattcchh to configure... I remember playing with it a few years back when I was gonna have a Linux-based media centre and it almost made my head explode.
In the end, I bought a Mac Mini and installed Plex, which is based on XBMC.
To be fair the *buntus (and Linux in general) have come on a long way in terms of configuration through a GUI in the last few years; I'm going to give Mythbuntu a go at least when I get my media centre built at the end of the year.

In fact, thinking about it, I can't remember if it was MythBuntu or just the MythTV package under a bog-standard Debian install that I did. Was a while ago now.
Anyway, I'd be interested to know how you get on with Mythbuntu when you get round to it. Can you post a thread when you do it, detailing your progress? Although I like Plex, I'm still a Linux fan at heart

Yea will do; it will be a good few months until it happens though!!! Tempted to have a play in a VM just to try it out soon though.

i have been using mythtv + extras in a ubuntu install for a while now on my media centre. I found it a bit of a nightmare to set up, (mainly my remote control and tv tuner).
I have found the music player fairly rubbish tbh, but i have not so far bothered to have a serious tinker.
tried eliza found that to be average, the search didnt seem to find the things i knew i had! but perfectly usable.
linuxmce i have not manged to get installed, waiting for a rainy day and some severe bordom.
