Really want to start using media centre more for HTPC stuff, but most of my video files are avi or mkv, are there any plugins etc that would make media centre see these?
Wow thanks for all the links, i should point out though i want to use media centre, i will be sticking with media centre and am not interested in alternatives to media centre
Haven't used anything other than sharks codec pack for a couple of years now and it works seamlessly on every file type I've thrown at it, all working happily from within windows media centre on windows 7 64bit.

I can also highly recommend the MediaBrowser plug-in for your 'front end' browsing of your video collection.
Out of the box, using both those, I have been able to play all my MKV's and AVI's etc.
The only addition I have is I use the CoreAVC codec as I wanted NVidia CUDA acceleration, and Total Media Theatre for HD-DVD/BR/DVD duties.
The only thing I had to really configure was the MKV splitter (Matroska) to prioritise English as the default language, with no subtitles by default, but this is a problem with my MKV encoding, where I didn't pick the correct defaults myself.
