I am trying to set up windows meida centre on Vista, I have added the movie files I wanted but when I try to open them within media centre it says I have codecs missing, or the file is not in te specified location?

These open in media player, I have the latest divX codec pack and the files are standard .avi

Not sure what the problem could be cause there are a few that do open?

Is there some specific codec pack I need to download from Microsoft, I have had a look but coudnt see.

Some Codecs that are compatible with WMP are not compatible with the media centre. You can download a codec checker from MS website to check. MS wont offer a codec pack without charging you for it.

In fact, the best one (by NVidia) is not free but is dam worth the £20 charge.

MCE and WMP are, to all intents and purposes, the same thing. Whatever works in WMP should work in MC.

This is for MPEG2 (DVD/Live TV), and isn't needed in Vista as MS include one out of the box.

Without meaning to sound psychic, you have the 64-bit version of Vista installed, don't you?

WMP is, by default, the 32-bit variety. MC is only available in 64-bit flavour. As such, the codecs that are installed for 32-bit playback don't work for 64-bit playback. So you need some 64-bit codecs - simplest way, download and install this:

Superstar,

That codec pack worked, this media centre is actually quite cool. a bit simple and hard to navigate but meh!!!

I dumped media Centre for media portal. main reason was the ability to resume movies ffrom where I left off. With media centre I had to keep fast forwarding to get to the last bit I watched were as media portal remembers and lets you resume.

Yup I tried Vista MCE and STILL doesn't do what Media Portal has done for years. I've tried XP MCE, Vista MCE and always gone back to XP Pro + Media Portal.
