hi all, i would like some advice if possible, i am thinking of having a pc in the living room behind my tv, now what i want is to have media on it, and 4k playback and maybe the odd bit of light gaming, now firstly i thought about putting my spare pc there, but it is exceptionally loud, specs are 3930 cpu, 900 watt psu 16 gb ram, 780ti, corsair h100 cooler, antec 800d tower with several fans, several hdd's and ssd's, now do i sell the spare pc and build a silent media centre or get a new case and try to get my current setup as silent as possible, i may need to swap out my m/b though as it is e-atx, im just not sure what to do any advice would be great.

I'm obsessed with silence and IMO the way to achieve it is to pick sensible parts that don't require much energy. So, that CPU and GPU will be generating lots of heat which isn't useful for a media centre.

They're good parts so you'll be able to trade / sell and rebuy decent stuff with lower TDP. I use an i5-3470S with a passive cooler in my quietest PC. Then it's just a case of tweaking fan curves to keep it quiet until temperatures go up.

I would also consider reducing the number of spinning disks as I've found they're the noisiest parts of my builds.

Well bequiet! are geared towards silence, although some models have subsequent airflow/temp issues. Aerocool also do a Dead Silence (DS) range in several sizes. Best to look for reviews.

It's also about your airflow configuration. I believe SilentPCReview or QuietPC wrote an article on making a quiet gaming PC and it ended up using a Corsair Air 240 - a cube style case with lots of open vents, and reversed airflow. In fact my quietest PC is a cube shape with horizontal motherboard, two intakes on top and one rear exhaust.

Keep the existing mobo/cpu and just ramp down the fan settings in BIOS. I have an X99 setup in my living room and its pretty quiet, may be a plain looking looking case like this as well with sound dampening. this case says its ATX but it fits EATX i have a gigabyte x99 soc champion in the glass version, switch to something like a GT1030.

typical, so i decided to go with my current gear, bought a new case, installed everything into it, and it wouldn't post, tried re-seating cpu, using 1 stick of ram, booting outside of case, even took main pc psu out to try that still the same, so looks like the m/b stopped working when i took it out somehow, and to top it off x79 m/b's are rarer the rocking horse ****,
