Hey guys, I have a wee machine here, and want to make it a file server to run movies from/stream from, what is the best OS?

really depends on the spec of the system.

if you basically want it as a media server. Then i would go for something like Mythbuntu.

its Ubuntu with MythTV built in.

MythTV can be run as a backend, serviving media files, a front end media center, or both.

u you can pretty much stream off it from any OS, and if you plan to have a dedicated media center to play stuff, then you can use a front end that works well.

it also uses considerable less space, and less system resources than something like vista or windows 7

I was only hoping to pull data from it from the systems on the home network.

The only interface I will have with it is when I am adding something onto it/setting the thing up. It will not be displaying any media it's self.

Its specs are:

E7500
2gig ram
and plenty of drive space :)

Nothing serious, but able to cope with network usage.
