Media controls without media center?

Hi, I was exploring the possibility of plugging a vga capable freeview box into my 2007fpw for TV. After reading up, it sounds as if its fairly bad quality and using an internal freeview card would be the better option. My question is, can I somehow get media center like controls to change channels / maybe control itunes etc and switch off my pc. I don't want to have to manually shut down pc when im just using it as a TV.
