Years ago I had a HP microserver running windows home server 2011 which ran plex media server, duly converted all my dvd's (as was fed up of trying to find them around the house). On each tv I had a nowtv box with plex running on it to view these files.

All was ok until we started paying for streaming services - it seemed pointless having the servers sat there doing nothing so they were switched off and stuck in a cupboard.

Anyway I rediscovered the server the other day - its amazing what you find when on furlough - I realised there were some home movies on the server, avi format, and also some dvd's that I hadn't watched in years and wasn't available on the services we pay for.

Booting the server all appeared ok after all the updates were installed - it sits quiet in the corner behaving itself. Now my issue is I no longer have the nowtv boxes and have some RoKu sticks that I got at Christmas for all of the TV in the house.

So I looked for a suitable client with which to view my files, anyway the ROKU client sees all of the content but as of yet I haven't found any that will play - it just comes back saying incorrect format. Adding plex to the sticks nothing works it's as though it can't find the server at all?

What options do I have to be able to stream the movies to the tv - I could go in the loft and find out the dvd's as they are still up there, but the home movies I don't know where they are.

Ideally I'd like to use the ROKU sticks I have but if not whatever solution I'd like to be as neat as possible.

Stick with Plex.

You can use Plex app with Roku boxes or Fire TV sticks. Plus games consoles have the Plex app and many smart TV's.

Plex client asks for server name but cannot find the server, so I don't know if plex has tried to update itself then had issues?

Make sure you are signed in to your Plex account from the server side.

You then need to link each device to your Plex account.

Generally I sign out off the Plex app on the device, then when you try to connect to your server via the app it gives you a code and a web address (https://plex.tv/link). Then on your phone or PC log into you Plex account, then use the https://plex.tv/link address and then type in the code.

Then the device will be linked to your server.
