Alright guys,

Basically a friend of mine is looking to buy a Multimedia PC for the living room that can also double up as a Gaming system.

We have gone through the excellent thread that shaffaaf27 created on this link OCuk Forum and he has decided going along these lines...

mediaspec2.jpg

The budget has a max limit of £650, i think the main concern for it being a media PC is noise from the 4850 but the reason for choosing the 4850 is for having sound over HDMI and some decent power.
AMD route instead of Intel, this was just a cost reason as i doubt that he will be overclocking.

Any feed back on this would be appreciated :)

Edit....
Memory is not required as he has 2GB of OCZ PC7200

If your friend wants a media system that can double as a gaming system, build him a gaming system, as the gaming system will handle all the media you throw at it.

If he wants a media pc then it will be naff for games.

Why bother with a 780G and then put a 4850 in. Only reason to go with the 780G is the fact that it can do BluRay playback with a sempron cpu for a media. You have picked an Extended-ATX case so hardly picking the motherboard because it needs to be small. You can fit a Dual Xeon server board in that case with room to spare.

If putting in a 4850 go get a Core2 CPU and P35/P45 system as cheaper and faster for gaming.

Yea i agree with what people are saying about the motherboard, but what core 2 can outperform the 6000+ at £70?

As i said i doubt itll be overclocked, just had a quick scan and its showing me the cpus that beat it cost a bit more ;)

Ill pass on the info and have a proper look through later, cheers

the e5200 may beat it too, as thats a 45nm chip and at the same speeds, 45nm cpus are about 200mhz quicker then 65nm chips

Cheers for the heads up, E5200 is a dman nice price if it beats the AMD6000+.

Any recomendations on a motherboard to suit?

The 4850 isn't too loud, I've got the powercolor 4850, the same as pictured in your spec and it isnt noticeable above my case fans. The stock speed of the fan is pretty quiet (25% fan speed) even when gaming the fan isn't noticeable, but the card does get pretty hot at load.

+1 for the mobo.....until your spec mentioned separate gfx etc.
That mobo is a fantastic htpc board, but as mdjmcnally said, build for gaming and it will cover just about everything else you need it to do.
I'd also get another 2gb of ram, seeing as you're going for 64-bit, it will utilise all 4gb if you have it, and will certainly thank you for it too.
+100 for the core2duo suggestion as well. E7200 is a good buy. To be honest, if you get a good gigabyte P35 board, one simple flick of a setting in the bios and your chip will run at over 3GHz easily, without the need to faff around with it again, or add exra cooling etc, or eve nhave overclocking knowledge. T'would be a crime not to! :p

I'd also lok for some advice on the wireless deskset you've spec'd. Is it good for fps gaming or will it lag? A lot of wireless sets do.

Cheers for the input guys, i think e7200 is the route to go then.

I have left out the OS and keyboard/mouse now from the spec as that kinda thing is a personal choice.

ta :)
