I'm hoping to build a PC for the sitting room.

Nothing fancy. I just want it to:-

Play MP3s thro my hifi
Send downloaded video to my DLNA TV (HD would be great but the TV's upscaler is pretty satisfactory)

I already have a 2.5inch sata HDD I can use.

I need:

Case
PSU
Mobo
CPU
RAM
Optical Drive
Modem
TV Card (preferably dual)

Doable?

it is not doable unless u get very old and incapable components.

the case is gona be at least 50, the tv card will be at least 50 leaves u with 100 for everything else?

not doable tbh, this is the best i could do:
mediapc.jpg

and i don't know much about TV cards so not sure about that

im by no means an expert on this but can the Acer Aspire Revo R3600 handle streamed 1080p? the r3610 is dual core but above £200

That I wouldn't know. I'm the first to admit that I'm not very switched on with PC's, I just saw it the other day and thought it might be something he'd be interested in. It might be totaly incapable for all I know, I just thought it better to let him know about it and dismiss it than not see it and it turn out to be up to the job.

The Acer Aspire Revos look good but they don't have a disc player or a TV card. I've been given a moden so that can shave some costs...

Urm dont you just need a ps3 ? Ah sorry you want tv card, Ignore

+1 for ps3
Plays all my blu ray rips (.m2ts,.avi e.t.c) flawless, Plus it will play all your mp3s e.t.c
But if you really need the tv tuner then the ps3 is not a option i suppose :/

A PS3 is tempting for the extra gaming aspect but it doesn't really do what I'm after.

I want to be able to surf the internet using firefox, and use the on-demand TV players (not just iPlayer). Also I want to use a better linux TV recording facility.

I'm thinking STrebor's suggestions are pretty much what I'll go for...

****. Wanted to look through Strebor's recommendations and can't view the picture now. Can anyone else?

I'm starting to think our work firewall's blocking the pics. I can't see either Strebor's or Phatzy's but clearly others can.

I have a spare lappy sata 320gb HDD which I can use for the time being.

Not sure about the lack of PSU - can't see their lists.
