Right I hope someone can help me with this. Because i'm not sure how powerful I need this system to be.

Basically this PC will be hooked upto a 37" HD LCD tv. It will be used for movie playback, including hd films .mkv files. Some web browsing and music playback, photo viewing.

I don't want to spend much on this only a couple of hundred quid if possible. It only needs a small hard drive and I have a psu I can use.

Thanks for any advice that can be offered.
 
I made on out of an old 939 system, with a x2 3800+ in it and 1GB of RAM does everything you mention. Dual core really helps when im converting video and watching one at the same time.
 
As said, ideally you definitely need dual-core if converting or playing back HD content.

GFX, either a ATI HD 2400 or NVIDIA 8500 series would drive that screen nicely & can offload some of the heavy decoding from the CPU ;)

Finally, a large capacity hard disk would be an added bonus ;)

here's a quick spec, you said you have a psu but do you have a DVD drive?
