I've just dusted off the 360 with the intention to use it as a DVD player just while I buy something smaller, I used to have the update that made avi files work on an old mem card but I've long lost that so I've tried to download it again It just doesn't bloody work! unless the console is always connected to live it says the update is needed as if I don't even have it.

Anyone have a cure for this or does the console always have to be online? I've got loads of old thomas the tank episodes on a flash mem stick for the baby a bit gutted I can't make it work

it must be doing that because it's not the Xbox 360 you originally downloaded it on. Is this correct?

What you could do is create a new gamertag (doesn't have to be gold - do it on Xbox.com) and re-download the update using that. It will grant a new licence for your console then.

Basically I lost the memory card with my old profile on so recently bought a HDD to use so had to recover the old profile and re-downloaded said update. Now if it's not online it says I don't have it, but I do. I'll try what you've said and see if it makes a difference.

That's strange, as the rights should be attached to the actual Xbox that you first downloaded it on, and not the storage medium. So, if you're still using the original Xbox, re-downloading the update should mean it works offline as well as signed in to LIVE. If this isn't the same console that your first downloaded that update to using your gamertag, you'll have to do the online rights transfer in order to watch avis without being signed in to LIVE.

Sorted it thanks guys, just made a new tag via xboxlive and then queued it so the second I connected it to the net it downloaded the update and it works offline now. Yay
