Hi there,

Just had a friend on the phone saying that he could'nt get a DVD to play using windows media player 10.

He recently did a fresh install of XP on his laptop. He tried to play a DVD and got a message saying that there needs to be a DVD decoder installed.

Now I did the same when I got my laptop some months ago, I did'nt install any decorders or anything and DVD's work fine. I am connected to the internet though and media player does download and install updates. This makes me think that a decoder would have been installed.

Which DVD decoder should I download to try out?

Thanks

Your laptop may have come pre-installed with some DVD software/codecs.

A lot of people will say K-Lite but I think it should be avoided personally for reasons of bloat mainly. K-Lite, I think, installs loads of codecs you'll never use.

So either CCCP or ffdshow I reckons. :)

I was going to suggest that jbloggs but Bennah's mate seems to want to use WMP.

I mean he even RANG Bennah! No MSN or anything so I thought it'd be wise to keep WMP in use. :)

....Bennah's mate seems to want to use WMP.....

k-lite codec

I personally think this is a bit bloated...

None of the WMP Updates will give you a DVD decoder though, so I would go with what marclister has recommended as a first step...:)

Well hes not really into computers, does'nt know loads about them. Just wants a laptop to do simple tasks, such as play DVDs.

Installing other programs and telling him to use them instead of WMP would be too much as he uses WMP for music and videos etc.

So would CCCP be a good option with WMP?

Im going round there tomorrow with the downloaded decoders to see if they work. Would be best to take a few things around to try out if some fail.

I think, as I said, that this is the common opinion of K-Lite. :)

I did think that it was very unlikely that Microsoft would be allowed to distribute DVD codecs via the WMP update mechanism. :)

Yeah CCCP will work. Just install it and he should be fine. Give ffdshow a try as well or as jbloggs says VLC is very good. It will combine a media player AND codecs in one. :)

Downloaded the suggestions. Will a little luck it will work when I try it out tomorrow.

Thanks guys.
