Hi,

I'm looking at building a media server so i can access all my files from one server that is always on. I'm currently just using a pc with an external hardrive. i've set it up so i can stream from my tv, laptop and other devices like phones and tablets, but my pc isn't cheap to run while it is on so i don't have it on all the time.

I'm looking to build a small quiet machine that is energy efficient that will look nice sitting in my livingroom. I've looked all over the internet for ideas as far as components are concerned but i'm still not sure what would be best for it?

is there such a thing as too powerful? i was looking at a few intel i5 setups but wasn't sure if a i7 would be better or just a waste for what i'll be using the machine for?

Any guidence or builds would be appreciated!

How much power does it consume? I have PCs left on 24/7 they aren't overly expensive, infact TV's on average consume more.

P.S welcome to the boards :)

By the sound of it you're after a NAS bay.
The Synology ones get good reviews and have a host of fetures. I'm looking at getting THIS one with some 2TB drives
But THIS should still do what you want for less cash

I did consider a NAS but decided a windows server that i could access easily would be better.

I'm not 100% sure on exact power consumption, and i'm not currently at home for another 2 weeks.

My PC isn't exactly the quietest thing either so i'm looking for a near silent machine with a lot of power to process all the information.

Thanks for the welcome :)

How about a HP Microserver? I use it with Vmware hypervisor and have several VM's running from it for media and NAS server.

Think quite a few people use them on here :)
