Well at the moment im building a gaming rig but im interested in turing my old dell into a media server that will be hidden in a closet. what i need to know is what i will need to stream music and
SD films over wirless to other pc's, my PS3 and tv's around the home and if possible use it to record TV and sky.
Spec as follows:

dell is a dimension 3100
P4 at 2.9
some crappy mobo with onboard graphics and sound. but no PCI-E or apg slots.
8500GT PCI card
1Gb RAM
160Gb HD
500w PSU
XP home 32bit

I want to spend as little as possible as i need as much money for my new rig. i have the old psu that came with the pc that runs fine as long as your not using a graphics card but im guessing it may be a little quieter. im guessing another HD would be handy.

Will the OS be ok for it?
What other parts will be needed or parts that need upgrading?

I know nothin about this as i dont know anyone that has one running. thx

Yep, that's all fine. All you really need is a network capable of handling the load. Any 100 mbit network like most have at home would be sufficient ten times over.

You can add hard disks as you like. You don't need a graphics card at all once you've set it up so onboard is just fine.

Xp home doesnt have remote desktop with it but im sure you could use some other remote desktop app

You could always whack some linux distro on there if you're looking for more functionality than XP home with no additional cost (apart from time)

This is what I do with my media setup. I use MythTV frontend and backend to record and watch TV. I use the MythVideo plugin to watch pre-recorded media. I play music with it and browse the web from my couch with MythBrowser. I administer it remotely using ssh from other machines at home or from work or anywhere else. It's very slick.

well i dual boot linux anyway so thats not a problem but i dont know much about it so im guessing its easier to use xp. at the moment i use nero media server to run stuff over to my PS3 so im guessing thats good enough to leave on there. my router is a net gear one free from aol but i was thinking of buying a faster one as there not many pennys. Btw what is a remote desktop?
