Yo!

I've seen some servers made by people like iMerge where you can have multiroom AV. Their top line unit allows 1 x audio and visiual, then an additional 4 audio outputs. Therefore, you can watch tv in one room and have 4 different types of music in 4 other rooms.

Question is, if I had a extender (like the X360 for example), in say 4 rooms and a centrally built server, maybe 64b with vista HP and a shed load of RAM and storage, what would be stopping me doing the above with the option of having as many rooms as you like?

I guess I could have 2 (or 3) NICs, but surely a router would do just as nicely?

Any thoughts?

You can do it really easily, you don't even need a full on pc in some cases.

All you need is a nas/server and player which support direct access to media folders (can't remember the exact term but my synology as does most other decent ones now do it).

The other way is as you said the xbox and pc. Some things like a squeezebox (audio only) requires specific software but if you have a pc thats not an issue and even some nas have support from slimserver/itunes. Bandwidth over cable should be fine, especially if you're doing multiple lan ports.
