Media Server Spec - Stream and Transcode

Hi folks,

I am looking at putting together a media server to host and stream video media to my PS3. It needs to be powerful enough to transcode on the fly, ideally HD content but I would be happy for that to be a future consideration.

basically what I want to do is rip all my DVDs onto a hard drives, put the boxes away, and stream to my plasma through the PS3. I use PS3 Media Centre with great sucecss on my main rig, so now want to go to a seperate 24/7 rig on gigabit ethernet.

I am not really up on the latest hardware, but I would really like to keep the price under £400.

how many Dvd's cause a £400 budget wont get you much hard drive space

I would be happy with a relatively limited initial solution as long as it is expandable, say 500gb or 1tb with the ability to expand to 3 or 4 tb maybe?
